The Difference Between Native Apps & Progressive Web Apps

Writer: Leo J BarnettLeo J Barnett

Native mobile apps and progressive web apps are both types of mobile applications, but they differ in how they are built and how they function.

A Native mobile app is an app that is specifically developed for iOS or Android. These apps are built using the programming languages and development tools that are specific to the platform, such as Swift (iPhone) or Java (Android). Native apps are downloaded from an app store, like the App Store or Google Play, and installed on a user's device. They have access to all the features and capabilities of the device, such as the camera, GPS, and accelerometer.

A Progressive Web App (PWA) is a web application that is designed to provide a native-like experience on mobile devices. You don’t have to download it. It’s basically a mobile optimised website. PWAs are built using web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and they are accessed through a web browser, rather than an app store.
